… to Thursday night’s Texas Community Music Festival performances!
Thursday started with a TCMF mainstay, the Dixieland Accidentals (I assure you, they did it on purpose)! They played — you guessed it — Dixieland jazz! The members of this group hail from the Austin Symphonic Band, and put together a set of great traditional jazz with lots of space for solo improvisation.
My favorite bit of their set (nerd alert!) was their snappy rendition of “Cantina Band” from “Star Wars.”
The Dixieland Accidentals were followed by the TCMF debut of The Bare Feat.
These young musicians brought a wall of heavy funk to the Cafe. With tremendous energy, great stage presence, funkier than funky compositions, these guys (and gal) are going to go far. They threw in a few covers too, a little AWOLNation, a little Amy Winehouse — their influences are across the board!
If you were in the audience Thursday night, you’ll appreciate being able to hipster-brag “I saw them at Central Market before they were mainstream.”
Thursday’s entertainment concluded with another TCMF debut band, the House of Rock and Roll, the “House” band for the Texas Legislature, featuring Rep. Richard Pena Raymond and Rep. Joe Pickett.
With a lively set of old-time rock and roll covers, they got people onto their feet – dancing, singing and having a good time. Rumor has it Rep. Richard Pena Raymond *wrote* music for artists including Jerry Lee Lewis, Elvis Presley, and Van Morrison, and made a mint allowing each of these rock legends perform his work. At press time this information is unconfirmed, and his staff declined to return our calls.
Here they are, performing your favorite and mine, “Mustang Sally.”
Friday night’s performances were HOT, if I do say so myself, and the patio was PACKED. I’ll get to more about that one as soon as I can, but right now? I’m off to Central Market and ready for more! Come and join us.
Are you an outing “planner?” Here’s a heads-up about tomorrow: The Austin Civic Wind Ensemble (our rehearsals are hosted by Covenant United Methodist Church, also home of CUMC Preschool) will be bringing out our full 70-piece membership Sunday afternoon at 1:30pm!
