Whatcha Doin’ Tonight?

I interrupt my non-stop Texas Community Music Festival coverage to bring you…

Well, more about the Texas Community Music Festival.   🙂

TCMF 2014

TONIGHT, Ms. Kat’s “grown-up” bands will be playing back-to-back sets at Central Market on North Lamar!

First up is Them Blue Skies, playing from 5:30 – 6:30pm.  Bob Russin on drums, Jim Gillespie playing bass, Larry Lyon on rhythm guitar, Jay Gammage on the Hammond B3, and myself on lead guitar and a good chunk of the vocals.  (I’ve been told that I’ve “got a voice so husky it could pull a sled.”)

We’ve been together since 2011, and this is our third appearance at the TCMF.  We play blues covers, from the old-timey, to the not-quite-as old-timey from the big Chicago blues explosion of the 60s, to more modern rock with an underlying blues structure.  And we’re known for throwing in a few non-blues wild cards just to keep you on your toes.

We’ll have TCMF coordinator Herb Holland sitting in on bari sax, and 2/3 of the “Holler and Swaller Horns,” Warren Gill on trombone, and David Dalke on trumpet.  What a treat to have a horn section!!!

We’ll break for a quick personnel change, and keep the groove going with Get It Good from 6:45 – 7:45.  Jay and I will stick around on the Hammond and guitar, and I’ll bring out the flute, too.  Rodell Rahmaan will be joining us on bass, and Jason Toll will take the throne behind Bob’s drums.

We’ve been together less than a year — our first “are we going to click” jam session was July 2013 — and suffice to say, we clicked!  We’ll be playing all-instrumental, all-original, all-improvisational jams for an hour.  Well, maybe we’ll throw a heavily modified jazz standard or two in the mix.  Funky, bluesy, jazzy, and groovy are four good reasons to Get It Good.

All TCMF performances are family-friendly and FREE!

See you tonight!  Meow, meow!
